While snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea that most people associate with men, many people don’t realize the effects that it has on women as well.
According to new research, sleep apnea could also lead to dementia in women.
In a report created by the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers studied 300 women for sleep quality. Of those tested, 35% had sleep apnea. That same 35% of women also had almost double the risk for dementia according to their study.
According to Dr. Ashish Patel of Huntington Hospital, women generally start their sleep problems later in life. One cause of this is that many women tend to gain weight after menopause.
“The signs of sleep apnea are very similar to dementia” Dr. Patel said. However he also mentioned that the symptoms could be reversed and prevented if people get their sleep apnea treated.
