There have been a lot of studies that concluded the correlation between smoking and snoring. Aside from the dangers of smoking to one’s respiratory, circulatory and heart health, smoking could definitely lead one to snoring. According to the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, smokers have higher chances to have habitual snoring compared to non-smokers. Same resulted to ex-smokers compared to those who have never smoked.
The linkage between smoking and snoring is scientifically studied and proven. The most general conclusions were:
- Chemicals from tobacco smoke can irritate the linings of the airways which then makes it narrower and clogs the normal flow of air during breathing.
- During sleep, nicotine from cigarette could damage the nerves in the airways that obstruct air flow and thus resulting to snoring. This is also known as the nicotine withdrawal which causes chemical changes within the cells that affects the breathing process during sleep.
The snoring caused by smoking is defined to be louder, more sleep-disturbing and more frequent in a week compared to those non-smokers. How about the effects of passive-smoking? We all know that second hand smoke could also be detrimental to one’s health, so it is same as true with passive smoking.
The effects of snoring could be very stressing and may negatively affect relationships. In order to solve the problem is to deal with what is causing it. Smoking, alcohol and even drugs are such great factors to snoring. Getting rid of it would lessen the chances of snoring and eventually in the long-run would stop the problem.
